What Community really lacks, what Enterprise really costs, and how to choose without regret.
Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition under LGPL. Odoo Enterprise is a paid subscription priced per user that adds Odoo Studio, an official mobile app, bank statement synchronisation, accounting automation, and apps such as helpdesk, field service, subscriptions and marketing automation. Community is genuinely capable for straightforward sales, inventory and purchasing; Enterprise earns its cost when you need those specific features, not simply because a business is larger.
Odoo Community is genuinely free and genuinely capable — CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, invoicing, projects, manufacturing basics and website all work. What it lacks are the polished extras: full accounting automation and bank sync, studio customisation, official mobile apps, some advanced modules, and Odoo's own support.
Enterprise charges per user per month, which scales with headcount. For a ten-user office the difference is modest; for a hundred users it becomes a real annual line item worth planning deliberately.
Our honest guidance: start from the modules you actually need. If accounting automation and mobile apps are central, Enterprise earns its cost. If your needs sit in the covered ground and budget matters, Community plus good implementation serves excellently — and we implement either without preference.
What you actually give up with Community
The honest list matters more than a feature grid, because most of what a business uses daily exists in both.

What Community does perfectly well
Sales, CRM, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, project management, website and POS all exist in Community. For a trading company, a workshop or a retailer running normal operations, the daily experience is close to identical.
It is also fully open source, self-hostable, and free of per-user fees — which matters if you have many light users, such as staff who only submit timesheets or check stock.
How to decide, in practice
Do not decide on company size. Decide on the specific list above. If nothing in it is something you would actually use, Community is the sensible answer and the money is better spent on implementation quality. If bank synchronisation would save your accountant hours every week, or you genuinely need helpdesk or field service, Enterprise pays for itself quickly.
Two practical notes. Enterprise pricing is per user, so the cost grows with headcount — worth modelling for two or three years, not just year one. And moving from Community to Enterprise later is a supported path, so starting on Community is not a decision you are stuck with.
