In short

A business data network covers switching, routing, WiFi, firewall and internet, designed so devices reach what they should and nothing else. The decisions that matter are segmentation — keeping guests, CCTV, payment devices and business systems apart — and what happens when the internet fails. A flat network where everything can reach everything is the commonest weakness found in small businesses.

A business network is the switching, routing, segmentation and firewalling that sits between your cabling and your systems. Cabling is the roads; the network decides what may travel where. Haya designs, installs, secures and monitors business networks across Qatar.

Why a flat network is the problem

Most small-business networks we inspect are flat: laptops, servers, cameras, door controllers, printers and guest phones all on one address range, able to reach each other freely. It works, which is why nobody changes it.

The trouble is that anything compromised reaches everything. A guest laptop with malware can see your accounts server. A cheap camera with a default password becomes a door into the network. Segmentation costs nothing but configuration and removes most of that exposure.

What we configure

The work is mostly design and configuration rather than hardware.

  • VLANs separating staff, guests, cameras, building systems and servers
  • Firewall rules written to a policy you can read, not accumulated ad hoc
  • Switching sized to actual traffic, with uplinks that will not bottleneck
  • Wireless integrated properly rather than bolted on as an afterthought
  • Remote access for staff that does not expose the whole network
  • Monitoring, so a failing link is noticed before somebody reports it

Multiple sites

A second branch changes the questions: how do the sites reach each other, does the ERP live at one of them, and what happens when the link between them drops.

Site-to-site links can run over the internet with encryption, or over a dedicated circuit where the traffic justifies the cost. We size that on your actual usage rather than defaulting to the expensive option, and we plan for the outage rather than assuming it away.

Network equipment we work with

Specified to the site rather than to a catalogue. A four-person office and a multi-branch operation should not be sold the same switch.

Ciscowhere an enterprise standard or existing estate requires it
ArubaHPE switching and controllers, common in larger fit-outs
Ubiquitiexcellent value with proper management, our usual recommendation for SMEs
MikroTikhighly capable routing at low cost where there is someone to configure it
TP-LinkOmada range for straightforward sites
Fortinetfirewalls where segmentation and inspection are the requirement
Sophosfirewall and endpoint where one vendor for both is preferred

Common questions

What is VLAN segmentation and why does it matter?

VLANs divide one physical network into separate logical networks, so CCTV, guest WiFi, payment devices and business systems cannot reach each other. It is the most effective network security measure available to a small business and costs nothing beyond configuration on switches you already own.

How do we stay online if the internet drops?

Two connections with automatic failover — but the second must be a genuinely different path. A second circuit from the same provider on the same infrastructure fails at the same moment. A mobile 5G backup is often the most practical second path in Qatar.

Our network is slow. Where do we start?

With measurement rather than replacement. Most "slow internet" complaints turn out to be one saturated link, one failing device or one client consuming the connection, and none of that is visible without monitoring. Replacing hardware before measuring usually changes nothing.
